charles shaughnessy's end of the year letter
![]() Out With The Old and In With The New Itąs that time again, and, boy, did it come around soon this year! Seriously, though, I cannot believe that it is already a year ago that I was down in San Diego shooting that epic of the airwaves: Saints and Sinners. Well, I hope it has been a kind year to all of you. It has certainly seen some tumult: fires, earthquakes, wars, credit implosion, housing crisis, debates, debates, more debates. And now my industry is floundering, and possibly foundering (look it up!) in the quicksand of a massive strike! It is certainly going to strain the Holiday Spirit here in Hollywood. I feel sad that it has come to this, and I feel especially sorry for all the thousands of people who are losing their jobs, who have nothing to do with writers or writing: they are the set decorators, the sound guys, the wardrobe, the florists, the limo driversŠthe list is endless. What makes me mad is that this has been coming for years now, like a runaway train and no one did anything to get out of the way. The Internet has changed all the business models in all the entertainment media. I donąt understand why we didnąt have a massive, round table discussion, conference even, with all sides participating including advertisers, technical, geeks, new media gurus, studios, actors etc. where all these issues could have been identified and grappled with before everything got so antagonistic. Meanwhile, across the globe, there are other men and women who are looking at pretty grim Holidays. These are the brave servicemen and women of our armed forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. So many are separated from their families, so we must also think of those left behind. I will be thinking especially of Cathy Dennison and Laura Shepard. Closer to home there are millions, literally millions, of men women and children who will be spending this Holiday time on the streets or in shelters with barely enough food to get them from one day to the next: in the same country where some people in our Congress see no reason to tax Hedge Fund windfalls as income. I just hope I never catch those miserable apologies for human beings singing : God Bless America! Yes, we need some change, and we need it badly. So my message this year is this: hold close to the ones that are near, think fondly of those that are far away and pray that this time next year America will be recognizable again, and we will have started on the road to healing and sanity. Peace, Love and Comfort to all of you this Holiday season. Charlie
