Los Angeles Lysistrata Readings to Protest War
Lysistrata Attracts Stars Opposed to War
By Buzz Johnson
LOS ANGELES -
Hollywood is once again weighing in on the side of peace. Julie Christie, Alfre Woodard, Christine Lahti, Mary McDonnell, Barbara Williams, Eric Stoltz, Ed Begley Jr. and Jose Zuniga are some of the actors who will present "a theatrical evening of dissent and imagination" with a reading of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata on Monday, March 3, 2003.
After hearing about the Lysistrata Project initiative, these actors decided to join their efforts with those of hundreds of other men and women all over the world who, on that same day, will stage readings of the play. "At least for the record of history we have to let it be known that millions and millions oppose this war," said actress Christie. To date, 538 play readings are scheduled in 36 countries to voice opposition to the war in Iraq; those numbers increase daily. Of the several in New York City alone, one production in particular will include the talents of Mercedes Ruehl, Kyra Sedgwick, Kathleen Chalfant, Delphi Harrington, Lori Singer, Kevin Bacon, David Straithairn, F. Murray Abraham and Peter Boyle.
Michael Clark Haney will direct the Los Angeles reading, with an introduction by Tom Hayden and music provided by John Densmore (drummer of The Doors). The Los Angeles Filmmaker Cooperative (LAFCO) has facilitated its new cultural space for the performance. Tickets will be available for a suggested donation of $15.00 on the day of the event on a first come first served basis. All proceeds will be donated to the political anti-war organization, Moveon. org . The reading can also be seen via web cast on the Internet.
Written by ancient Greek dramatist Aristophanes (c.447-c.385 b.c.e), Lysistrata tells the story of women from opposing states that unite in Athens to end the Peloponnesian War. After matronly "storm troopers" take over the building where public funds are kept, the women rise up to end the war by withholding sex from their mates, until desperate for intimacy, the men finally agree to lay down their swords and find a way to achieve peace through diplomacy.
New York actors Kathryn Blume and Sharron Bower conceived the Lysistrata Project in early January of this year. "Before we started Lysistrata Project, we could do nothing but sit and watch in horror as the Bush Administration drove us toward a unilateral attack on Iraq," says co-founder Blume. "Our purpose is to make it very clear that President Bush does not speak for all Americans."
